» UNDERSTANDING THE HOLY SPIRIT SERIES

Our Study of the Holy Spirit was introduced by looking at the introduction given Him by our Lord Jesus in John 14:26-28, 16:7-15. We also looked at Isaiah 11:2 where we learnt about different dimensions of the Holy Spirit. He has been described to be like WATER in John 7 and like the WIND and TONGUES OF FIRE in Acts 2 – the day of Pentecost. He is called the Hand of God in the Old Testament and the Spirit of Truth, Grace and of the Living God etc. He is the executive arm of God the Father and in Genesis 24, He can be likened to Abraham’s servant who wanted a wife for his master’s son. The wife-to-be, Rebekah, had to follow the servant, not knowing all the exact details. Believing and trusting, she followed and was led to her husband-to-be, Isaac. We are all to follow the Word and the Spirit of God to our God-ordained destiny. The Word can be likened to a map where you locate where you are and the Spirit likened to a Guide who takes you where you should be going in God.

THE HOLY SPIRIT AS WATER
In John 7:37-39— We are told about the Spirit of God who comes to those who thirst. What are the rivers of living water?

JOHN 7:37-39: The promise of the Holy Spirit.
37. On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38. He who believes in me, as the scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39. But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was, not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

JOHN 4:10, 13, 14: Jesus answered and said to her, “ If you knew the Spirit of God and who it is who says to you, “ Give me a drink,” you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water.” Jesus answered and said to her, “ Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again. “ But whoever drinks of the water I shall him, will never thirst. But the water I shall give him, will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”

ISAIAH 12:3: Draw water from this well with Joy; Therefore with Joy you will draw water from the wells of Salvations.

PSALM 42:1-2:

  • As the deer pants for water brooks, so my soul pants for you, oh God.
  • My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?

PSALM 1:1-3:

  • Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seats of the scornful;
  • But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night.
  • He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.

ISAIAH 55:6-12:
6. Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near.
7. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him; and to our God he will abundantly pardon.
8. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways”
9. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
10. “For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there, but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater.
11. So shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; it shall not return to me void, but it shall accompany what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.
12. For you shall go out with joy and be led out with peace; the mountains and the hills shall break forth into singing before you, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands”

EZEKIEL 47:1-6:

  • Then he brought me back to the door of the temple and there was water, flowing from under the threshold of the temple toward the east, for the front of the temple faced east; the water was flowing the right side of the temple, south of the alter.
  • He brought me out by way of the north gate and led me around the outside to the outer gateway that faces east; and there was water running out on the right side.
  • And when the man went out to the east with the line on his hand, he measured 1000 cubits and he brought me to the waters and the water came to my ankles.
  • Again he measured 1000 and brought me through the waters. The water came up to my knees. Again he measured 1000 cubits and brought me through the water. The water came up to my waist.
  • Again he measured 1000 and it was a river I could not cross for the water was too deep, water, which one must not swim, a river that cannot be crossed.
  • He said to me, “son of man, have you seen this?” Then he brought me and returned me to the bank of the river.

The conditions are: Thirst, Believe and have Joy. You can then be a channel for others to drink from. For a river, there must be a Source. The Source of this river is God the Spirit, you are a channel. As he flows out of you, He is able to do in and through you what God wants done.

BENEFITS OF TONGUE-TALKING
This understanding of flow can be put into the understanding of speaking in tongues .

ISAIAH 28:11-12: It’s a rest and refreshing - 11. For with stammering lips and another tongue He will speak to this people, 12. To whom he said, “This is the rest with which you may cause the weary to rest, this is the refreshing.” Yet they would not hear.

1 CORINTHIANS 14:2,4: Edification
2.For he who speaks in tongues does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
4.He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.

JUDE 20: Build up yourself - But you, beloved, building yourselves upon your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit.
