In our fast changing world, changes are coming at us faster than we are able to handle them. There is so much knowledge today that we are inundated with information from every known source. If we do nothing about our lives, changes will impact us in ways that we may not like. We are growing older with time and our responsibilities and perceptions are changing as aging takes place. Inflation is biting into our savings and what ever we keep for the future will not have the same value in the future as it has now, it will have a lower value. Personal development is a conscious employment of the knowledge of principles and practises that can help us effect desirable changes in what the future holds. Rather than let the future be thrust upon us without our freedom of choice. Maturity is not a function of time but is dependent on the choices we make. Our effectiveness, efficiency and future fulfilment cannot be left to chance. We must take charge of our lives to ensure that we look forward to having what we love to experience and what we know to be God’s will for our lives. From a Christian perspective, personal development is an application of principles that can enhance our service for God’s kingdom. It all starts with taking responsibility for our future within the context of what lies with us. We are here to do the will of God, having come into a relationship with him through Jesus Christ our Lord. Many writers who do not have faith like ours have taken some of the tools of personal development to the exclusion of our Lord and His purposes and these have the tendency to expose people to many other factors and forces. The latent power of the mind, for instance, has been known to be studied and many are being exposed to other sources of power other than the obvious God-given role and power of the mind. When ever humans explore any power source without recognition of God as the ultimate source, the demonic powers have a field day. We are to engage life with the knowledge of the Creator and the out-working of His purposes. Personal development takes place when I submit to certain principles in practice to ensure an outcome that is favourable. For instance to stay healthy, I submit to the principles of healthy eating, exercises and taking supplements for a healthy heart etc. I am engaging in personal physical development. The tools for personal development include Time Management, Goal setting, identifying your values, prioritising your tasks, having your vision and mission statements. You need to develop the habits of reading good books, listening to tapes/dvds/cds etc to enlarge your perspectives in many subject matters. It is getting our lives better organised so we can be more effective, getting our priorities in place so we do the most important things first. It involves having a plan and implementing a well thought-out plan. It includes working with the mind of efficiency to achieve maximum potentials. So we have to learn to organize, plan, execute plans, get feedback and make adjustments to plans and go at it again until we accomplish our set objectives. Our attitude towards work, people and life all need adjustments from time to time. Our relational skills also go a long way to affect how much we can accomplish in life. Our motivations also play a part in out life’s journey. We also learn from those who have achieved great feats in their chosen fields. We are inspired by their determination, decisiveness and courage to accomplish what they did. Other peoples’ stories also help our development as we seek to maximise our potentials in God. The discovery of our purposes and knowledge of our gifts and recognition of our potentials all add to the beauty and drive for our personal development. We just want to be the best we can be for God. In the pursuit of personal development, we need to be focussed, to study and understand the most applicable of principles and employ them for our personal development. There are many books on almost every subject in the whole personal development study. We need to be disciplined enough to read the most relevant books in our quest for personal development. Welcome to growth, to governing your life with Godly principles and to a life that is lived to the fullest. Every new emphasis in the spirit needs an adjustment in the direction of our personal development. When we begin to comprehend a more accurate dealing in the processes we are going through in God, wisdom demands some flexibility in our pursuit of personal development. The goal of our spiritual development is to make progress in the direction of God’s plans and purposes in our lives. A wholesome personal development should encompass the physical, social, Mental and spiritual aspects of our lives.
